The two-day international conference of Agent Orange/dioxin victims, which was jointly organized in Hanoi by the Vietnam Association of Agent Orange Victims, Vietnam’s War Veteran Association and Union of Friendship Organizations, attracted 150 delegates, including Agent Orange/ dioxin victims, lawyers, scientists and social activists from the US, South Korea, Australia, Canada, New Zealand....

Living with the sufferings

A village filled with love, affection and humanness that embraces entirely all the sufferings of the kids, the war veterans and the former youth volunteers. All of them are victims of the Agent Orange/ dioxin, a chemical toxicant that was sprayed by the American GIs over Vietnam during the war. It is the Vietnam Friendship Village.

On January 30, 2004, three Vietnamese representing the Agent Orange/dioxin victims and the Association of Agent Orange/dioxin Victims of Vietnam filed a lawsuit to the US federal court in Brooklyn, New York state, demanding US chemicals companies to compensate for the harm to their health caused by the chemical toxics produced by those companies and used by US forces during the Vietnam War. VNP interviews Prof. Dr. Nguyen Trong Nhan, Vice President of the Association, on the case.

Dioxin - The pain of all people

At the 4th Vietnam: Land and its People Photographic Contest and Exhibition held recently by Vietnam Pictorial and Vietnam Association of Photographic Artists, a group of pictures entitled Dioxin - Responsibility of the US by photographer Ngo My won the First Prize. In these photographs, Ngo My reflected only three Vietnamese Agent Orange/Dioxin victims, including Major Tu Duc Phang, Tran Quang Hung and Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa, with their sufferings caused by the war.

Justice to Agent Orange/Dioxin victims

On January 31, 2004, Vietnam Agent Orange/Dioxin Victims Association (VAVA) and 3 victims, Phan Thi Phi Phi, Nguyen Van Quy and Duong Quynh Hoa, filed a lawsuit against the US Chemical Companies for manufacturing toxic chemicals and supplying them to the US Army for use in the war of aggression against Vietnam. The suit was filed at the US Federal Court in Brooklyn County (New York) which had once tried the US Vietnam Veterans’ case against the US Chemical Companies for compensation.

Pains that linger

During a trip to find materials for our articles on Agent Orange/Dioxin, which was organized from March 7-26, 2005 jointly by the Professional Fostering Centre of Vietnam Journalists’ Association and Lille Journalist University, France, and the Hanoi-based Embassy, we traveled to many places nationwide to collect information and record images of serious impacts of Agent Orange/ Dioxin on Vietnamese people and environment. Here, we would like to present some unfortunate lots with a view to rousing human conscience for a concerned voice to protect protecting justice and help victims overcome their misfortunes.

Scientific Proof: Necessary or not?

According to the US Defence Departments official data, in the operation code-named Ranch Hand, from 1961 to 1971, the US Army sprayed 72 million litres of toxic chemicals over South Vietnam, including 44.338 million litres of Agent Orange, containing roughly 170 kilos of dioxin (C 12 H 4 C 4 O 2 ). A Luoi District of Thua Thien-Hue Province alone was exposed to 434,812 gallons of the Agent Orange containing about 11 kgs of dioxin.
