Tran Mai Huong introduces the photo series winning a special
prize to Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party
of Vietnam Tong Thi Phong, Deputy Chairwoman of the National
Assembly.
| The award
ceremony of the “Golden Moment” Press Photography Contest and Exhibition was
held at the Exhibition House at
No. 45 Trang Tien Street
in
Hanoi
. The contest organized
for the first time by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and funded by Nokia,
attracted many highly skilled photographers.
Running from September
15th 2007 to August 15th 2008, the contest attracted 3,129 photos
(including 83 series) from 409 photographers throughout the country. 112
works have been award prizes including a special prize, two first prizes
(for a photo and a series), three second prizes (for a photo and two
series), six third prizes (for three photos and three series) and nine
consolation prizes (for five photos and four series).
Vietnam
Pictorial Magazine’s correspondents were awarded prizes for five works,
including a second prize for the “Beauties from other countries practice
to say ‘I love Vietnam’ in Vietnamese at the 2008 Miss Universal Contest
held in Vietnam” by Minh Quoc, a third prize for the series “United
Nations Day of Vesak 2008” by Trong Chinh, two consolation prizes for the
“Nguyen Cong Hung, A Talented Disabled Person” and a series “Affirming the
Vietnamese Coffee Trademark” by An Thanh Dat, and a consolation prize for
the series “On the Salt Marsh” by Le Minh.
The photo reportage “Tung Chin,
One Hour of Devastation” by Xuan Truong and Thong Thien reflects the
severe damage caused by a flood that swept through Tung Chin 1 Hamlet in
Trinh Tuong Commune, Bat Xat District in Lao Cai Province on August 8th 2008. In a short period of time, the hamlet
inhabited by nearly 200 Dao ethnic people became a territory of rubble.
The photos make people think of the human responsibility needed to avoid
the suffering that could result from another natural disaster like that in
Tung Chin Hamlet. The reportage reflects the photographers’ efforts to
timely capture the event.
The collection “Call from
Long-tailed Monkeys” captured by Le Hoai Phuong in
Binh
Thuan
Province
reflected
another aspect of press photography. The photos highlight environmental
protection.
The work “Little Huyen Thuong
Tells a Story about Uncle Ho" by Lan Xuan from Nghe An Province
illustrates a little girl crying while she tells of the impressions left
on people during the last minutes of Uncle Ho’s life.
With a photographic language,
the photographers depict livelily and creatively the diversity and
richness of the social life. Only mingling with the daily activities can
the photographers produce truthful photographs, providing the information
demanded by people. This is the first phase of the “Golden Moment”
contest, but it has left an indication of the development of today’s press
photography.
The second “Golden Moment”
press photography contest was launched on September 15th
2008.
