| Participating in the “Vietnam Summer Camp 2008” with the
theme “Journey to the Homeland’s Heritage Sites”, organised by the
Committee for Overseas Vietnamese in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh
Communist Youth Union Central Committee, 72 young overseas Vietnamese from
24 countries in the world have been left with unforgettable impressions of
Vietnam.
It was the
first time for most of the participants to return to their homeland to
participate in a 15-day journey along the length of the country. They
visited and learned about the historical relics as well as natural and
cultural sites which have become the heritages of Vietnam and the world,
such as Hung Temple, Ha Long Bay, the old imperial city of Hue, the
ancient town of Hoi An, Cu Chi tunnels, etc. They also participated in
joyous, useful and significant activity programmes. They interacted with
young people and students in the “Ringing the Golden Bell” programme held
in the north, joined the “Immortal Flowers” and “Singing of the
Motherland” programmes held in the central region of the country and
partook in the closing ceremony of the 2008 Summer Camp held in the
south.
Nguyen Thi Phuong, an overseas
Vietnamese from
Laos
said: “This is a rare
cheerful occasion and I have got acquainted and talked with many new
friends. Back home, I will tell my family and my Vietnamese and Lao
friends about the history of national construction and defence of the
Vietnamese nation”. Nguyen Van Duc from the
Czech
Republic was very impressed by the changes in
Hanoi, compared with what he had seen in
his return to
Vietnam
six years before. He
said: “I am a native of
Hanoi
. I always remember
Hanoi
, especially on
the occasions of festivals and Tet Holidays. Returning to
Hanoi
, I see that it
has changed a lot. The streets are crowded and bustling and many high-rise
buildings have been built. Visiting Uncle Ho’s mausoleum and seeing the
film about his life and activities, I feel more close to and proud of
Uncle Ho and love the country and people more”. Truong Quoc
Nam, an overseas
Vietnamese from
Canada
was preoccupied when seeing that
Tuy
Hoa
City in
Phu
Yen
Province
, his native place, still
faces difficulties and hardships and there is an obvious large gap in the
quality of life between the cities and rural areas. He hoped that young
people who were studying and working in foreign countries would come back
to their homeland to build the country and develop the national economy.
Representing the students from
Austria, Dang Xuan Bach said he left with
his family to go to
Austria when he was 2 years old, so he did
not remember
Vietnam
. However, his parents
regularly taught him the Vietnamese language as well as the culture and
customs of
Vietnam
. Returning to the
homeland this time, he visited well-known tourist sites, learned more
about the country and people and met with his relatives. Now Bach is
studying at the
University of
Medicine
and intends to study
Vietnamese traditional medicine. He said he would study hard to contribute
to his homeland. Also coming from
Austria, Le Thi Phuong Lien was very proud
and touched when she burnt incense sticks on the graves of people who had
died for the Fatherland, at
Truong
Son
Cemetery
. Born in peace time, she
was really moved and loved the country more when she visited the cemetery
of heroes and martyrs. She wished to return to
Vietnam
to work after
graduation.
Wherever
they are, all Vietnamese generations are looking towards their homeland
with a sacred love. The young overseas Vietnamese who returned to the
Fatherland to attend the 2008 Summer Camp are trying their utmost in
studies to be worthy of being Vietnamese people who will bring fame to
their country.
