Vietnam Takes the Post of Rotating President of the UN Conference on Disarmament

According to Vietnam News Agency’s correspondent in Geneva, on September 9 the United Nations Conference on Disarmament (CD) ended its last session of 2008 with an annual report submitted to the United Nation General Assembly. Vietnam will undertake the role of rotating President of the UN CD for the first session of 2009.  Speaking at the session, Pham Quoc Tru, Charge d’Affairs of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, the World Trade Organization and other international organizations in Geneva, made clear it is an honour for Vietnam to be the first CD president for 2009. Vietnam is determined to conduct consultations during the break period with all CD member countries with the view of providing the best conditions to start the CD’s work next year helping to bring success to the CD session in 2009. The task will obviously be facilitated by cooperation among all, particularly the presidents of the 2008 and 2009 sessions and the success of the 2009 session of CD are up to the joint efforts of all CD members. Therefore, Vietnam calls upon all delegations to approach the 2009 session with an open mind and in a spirit of compromise, flexibility and renewed determination in order to achieve the Conference’s objectives.
