.:::. In brief
Vinasat 1 to be Launched

According to Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT), Vietnam’s first commercial telecommunications satellite named Vinasat 1 will be launched to the stationary orbit 1320 east at 5:30 (local time) on April 12, 2008. The exploitation of the satellite will help enhance Vietnam’s status and affirm the country’s sovereignty in space. It contributes to achieving national information infrastructural facilities, raising the capacity and strength of Vietnam’s information network.

Capable of handling more than 10,000 telephone, internet and data transmission channels or about 120 television channels, Vinasat 1 will provide radio, television and telephone transmissions for the nation, as well as Laos, India, Australia and other countries in the Asia Pacific region.

The satellite is also expected to benefit Vietnamese people in remote and isolated areas, giving them access to modern telecommunications services despite their geographical location.

Vinasat 1 is worth more than 200 million USD and has a lifespan of 15 years.
