According to the
organizing committee of the United Nations Day of Vesak 2008 (UNDV), 1,500
delegates of 600 delegations from 95 countries and territories have been
registered to participate in the UNDV celebrations to be held from May 13-17,
2008 in Hanoi.
The celebrations will commemorate the 2552nd Year of the Birth,
Enlightenment and Passing Away of the Buddha Gautama. The event is a religious
festival, a combination of the cultural quintessence and traditional Buddhist
ceremonies of countries and territories in the world.
It is the first
time the celebration is being held in Vietnam, providing an opportunity to
introduce the national cultural quintessence and Vietnamese Buddhism to
international friends.
The organizing
committee said that the celebrations will be held at the National Convention
Centre with solemn and impressive religious rituals. During the event there is a
ritual-culture programme and an exhibition on Vietnamese Buddhism. At the
closing ceremony in the evening, thousands of delegates together with nuns and
Buddhist followers at home and abroad will join a candle-lit procession for
world peace.
