An Impressive Trip

Prof. Jerome I. Friedman – the Nobel Prize Winner in Physics in 1990 – attended the opening ceremony of the 39th International Physics Olympiad (IPhO 39) held in Vietnam. During his stay in Vietnam, the Professor gave some lectures to Vietnamese teachers and students and visited some beautiful places.

Characteristics of H’re Ethnic People

Ba To is one of the six mountainous districts in Quang Ngai Province, 60km from the provincial centre to the southwest, with a population of 48,200 people. Of this number, the ethnic groups, including the H’re people, account for nearly 90%.

Vietnam’s Record Holding Clock Collector

The attractive house at 129B Nguyen Dinh Chinh Street, Ward 8, Phu Nhuan District in Ho Chi Minh City has for a long time been a destination for people who have a fancy for seeing things of beauty.  Inside one can find unique collections of bronze statues, gems, bird cages and particularly a collection of hundreds of clocks. These timepieces of various styles, sizes, materials and colours are displayed on the walls and tables. The owner of the collections is Do Duy Ngoc who has spent dozens of years acquiring these objects as a hobby.

The Success of the National Burn Institute
Shocked, stunned and frightened are the common feelings of people with severe burns who are treated at the National Burn Institute. Each day the physicians at the Institute receive over 10 heavily burned patients who are sent from many parts of the country.

Returning to the Source
Participating in the “Vietnam Summer Camp 2008” with the theme “Journey to the Homeland’s Heritage Sites”, organised by the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee, 72 young overseas Vietnamese from 24 countries in the world have been left with unforgettable impressions of Vietnam.

Bringing Knowledge to Remote Areas
The hamlets of ethnic groups, such as the Thai, La Hu, Dao, Mong are situated on the mountain sides above the Da River in Lai Chau Province. Among the vast green colour of the mountains and forests in this area schools have been built. Although the hamlets do not have electricity, the schools have lightened the people’s belief.

The Kovalevskaia Fund
One morning in the winter of 2007, in a small display room at the Vietnam Women’s Museum in Hanoi, an old American couple stood in front of a display case reading captions of evidences of war crimes at Con Dao (Paulo Condor Prison). They were Prof. Neal Koblitz, creator of hyperelliptic curve cryptography and the independent co-creator of elliptic curve cryptography and his wife Ann Hibner, co-founders of the Kovalevskaia Fund which honours women scientists in developing countries.

Enhancing the Position of Press Photography
The award ceremony of the “Golden Moment” Press Photography Contest and Exhibition was held at the Exhibition House at No. 45 Trang Tien Street in Hanoi. The contest organized for the first time by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) and funded by Nokia, attracted many highly skilled photographers.
